The first book I read which really got me motivated to remove grains from my diet was Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend it. It’s not a diet book, per se, but rather follows the history and scientific evidence behind what has been fueling our current obesity epidemic. Mr Taubes does a great job explaining the biochemisty of our metabolic processes. The following poster is based on that science. Heart Disease Myth Exposed

Here’s a great article by Dr. Dwight Lundell, a cardiologist. He has had the courage to admit to the failings of the medical and scientific community regarding the cause and treatment of heart disease. To read the full article go to:

“The only accepted therapy was prescribing medications to lower cholesterol and a diet that severely restricted fat intake. The latter of course we insisted would lower cholesterol and heart disease. Deviations from these recommendations were considered heresy and could quite possibly result in malpractice.”

If you had any lingering doubts about adopting a Paleo diet, Dr. Lundell’s article should go a long way towards quelling them. It’s wonderful to see a physician willing to stand up to the establishment to get the truth out. Bravo Dr. Lundell!

Supplements and the Paleo Diet

“Don’t you think that it’s a little ironic that you eat like a caveman, yet you take supplements made in a modern factory?”

That’s a question that I’ve been asked more than once. For a number of reasons my answer is a resounding no. Even though I try to eat like our earliest ancestors, I don’t live in their environment. Today we are subject to all sorts of stresses that our Paleolithic forbearers weren’t. Stresses such as pollution, food grown in mineral depleted soil, environmental toxins, and damage done to the body with all those years spent eating processed foods and grains, to name just a few. Taking supplements to help counteract these stresses makes good sense. While I pretty much reject “conventional wisdom” regarding a healthy diet, I don’t reject the advances that science has made regarding the benefits of vitamins and minerals to optimizing our health and well being. That would be like saying since I’m eating like a caveman, I can only cook like a caveman over an open fire. Sorry, but I love my dacor oven and stove! Modern life and modern science do have some benefits.

The supplements that I use help me to offset the effects of our modern environment and since I’m not always perfect in what I eat, they ensure I’m getting the vitamins and minerals I need.
